Calbee Inc., Japan’s leading potato chips and snacks company, is set to launch a new promotional campaign called “NFT Chips” in collaboration with Astar Network, the smart contract platform for multichain. Under this campaign, Calbee will issue evolving NFTs on the Astar blockchain. Customers who purchase a pack of Usu-Shio, Consomme-Punch, or Nori-Shio potato chips will be able to claim a free, evolving Potato NFT by participating in an origami-like game called “Ori-pake.”

To participate, customers will have to fold the package of chips in a specific way, following the instructions printed on it, and then scan it using Calbee’s smartphone application “Lbee Program” to confirm that they have done it correctly. Customers will also need to download the “wappa” Web3 data wallet created by DataGateway to claim their free NFT. Each time a customer registers a new Ori-pake after eating a pack of potato chips, their NFT will evolve and grow. After registering five Ori-pakes, users will see their evolving NFT transform into one of dozens of characters from the “Jagaverse” virtual world.

A hundred lucky winners will receive a special “gold character” in their wappa wallet, which entitles them to six free packets of potato chips. Everyone who holds a fully evolved Potato NFT will have access to new digital experiences in the future. This campaign is a significant milestone in Astar’s efforts to achieve mass adoption in Japan.

Astar Network CEO Sota Watanabe expressed his excitement about this use case on Astar Network and said that Calbee’s chips are the most consumed chips in Japan. He hopes that this campaign will make a future where Japanese people are using Astar Network without knowing what blockchain is.

Astar Network is a smart contract platform and bridge connecting layer-1 blockchains like Ethereum and Cosmos with the Polkadot ecosystem. It was voted the most popular blockchain in Japan by the Japanese Blockchain Association in 2022 and recently topped CoinGecko’s list of Japan’s most popular coins. Last year, Astar partnered with 329 of Japan’s top brands in a marketing campaign to spearhead the growth of Japan’s Web3 ecosystem.

Calbee’s NFT Chips campaign on Astar is made possible through Calbee’s partnership with DataGateway, which jointly developed the wappa data wallet with Hakhudo and CryptoGames to enable customers to own and manage their evolving NFTs. The wappa wallet is founded on the principle that personal data belongs to the individuals who create it, not the companies that want to use it. As such, it enables true data sovereignty. Data held within wappa can be provided to individual companies anonymously only with the permission of the wallet owner.

The NFT craze has been sweeping across Japan, and dozens of leading brands are embracing the possibilities of Web3. Astar’s recent partnership with Tokyu Railways saw it distribute free utility NFTs to train passengers. With more companies exploring the potential of NFTs, the use cases for blockchain technology are expanding beyond financial applications. The Calbee NFT Chips campaign is a prime example of how blockchain technology can be used to enhance marketing campaigns and engage with customers in new and innovative ways.
