⚔️🛡️💸 QUANTUM ATTACK ON ₿ITCOIN BECOMES 86% “CHEAPER” IN JUST 2 MONTHS🤺
The race between blockchain and quantum computing has just gained a new alert.
An open challenge with more than 100 researchers and AI agents managed to reduce by approximately 86% a space-time cost metric of an essential circuit for a potential quantum attack on the cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The new circuit for the secp256k1 curve uses about:
⚛️ 1,151 logical qubits
⚙️ 1.30 million Toffoli gates
The benchmark score dropped from approximately:
10.75 BILLION → 1.496 BILLION
in less than two months.
🔥 Why Does This Matter?
A fault-tolerant quantum computer could, in theory, use Shor’s algorithm to recover a private key from an exposed public key.
According to an estimate from Coinbase’s quantum advisory board cited by the report, about 7 million BTC are currently in addresses whose public keys are already visible, including older P2PK-type wallets.
⚠️ BUT THIS DOESN’T MEAN BITCOIN CAN BE BROKEN TODAY
The researchers themselves stress that optimizing the circuit does not create the quantum computer needed to run it. Current hardware remains far from a fault-tolerant machine capable of this attack.
The warning sign is the speed of progress: AI + human researchers are reducing the required resources more rapidly.
Ethereum has already set an aggressive goal to make its L1 resistant to quantum threats across execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029.
🔥 Maybe the real race isn’t
“When will the quantum computer arrive?”
But:
“Bitcoin▸
$BTC ▸ Ethereum▸
$ETH ▸ will be ready when it arrives?”
👇 Is the quantum threat still far off, or does it already deserve top priority?
