Fogo, a Layer 1 blockchain focused on high-speed onchain activity, has halted its mainnet after an attacker obtained 400 million $FOGO tokens.
The affected amount represents around 4% of Fogo's 10 billion-token genesis supply and more than 10% of the tokens currently in circulation. With FOGO trading near $0.0075 around the time of the incident, the compromised tokens were valued at approximately $3 million.
The Fogo Foundation initially said the incident affected its organization rather than the blockchain itself. The network continued operating normally during the early stages of the response.
However, roughly 15 hours later, Fogo validators halted the mainnet to prevent further movement of the affected tokens and prepare an upgrade designed to restrict addresses associated with the unauthorized activity.
The Foundation has not yet disclosed exactly how the compromise occurred. It remains unclear whether private keys, internal systems or specific Foundation-controlled wallets were involved.
The size of the transfer is significant because the 400 million tokens represent a much larger percentage of circulating supply than of the total genesis supply.
If an attacker were able to move or sell such a large quantity through liquid markets, FOGO could face substantial selling pressure, particularly if market liquidity is limited.
Exchange restrictions have therefore become an important part of the response. Some major trading venues suspended FOGO deposits and withdrawals around the time of the incident, limiting the ability of the affected tokens to move through those channels.
Fogo's decision to restrict addresses at the network level also raises broader questions about validator governance and transaction control during security emergencies.
Freezing or restricting attacker-linked assets can help contain losses and prevent further unauthorized movement. At the same time, it demonstrates that the network's validators can intervene in transaction activity under exceptional circumstances.
That issue is particularly relevant for Fogo because the blockchain is designed around high-speed onchain trading and very short block times. Network reliability is therefore a central part of its infrastructure proposition.
The mainnet halt also ends Fogo's previously reported uninterrupted uptime record since launch, turning the incident into an important operational test for the network.
For FOGO holders, several developments will be important to monitor.
First, the project needs to explain how the attacker obtained control of the 400 million tokens and whether any additional assets remain at risk.
Second, the treatment of the compromised tokens will matter. Holders will want clarity on whether the affected assets will remain frozen, be recovered through another mechanism or be permanently restricted.
Third, the resumption of mainnet operations will provide an important indication of how effectively validators can implement the security response.
A short and clearly documented shutdown followed by a stable restart could help contain the damage. A prolonged halt, additional unauthorized transfers or uncertainty surrounding address restrictions would create greater concerns about the network's security and governance model.
For now, the incident is less about the dollar value of the stolen tokens and more about how Fogo responds to a compromise involving more than 10% of its circulating supply.
The next stages of the investigation, network upgrade and mainnet restart will be critical in determining how the market assesses Fogo's security and operational resilience.
