Minting Stablecoins Without Selling: The Yield Strategy That Hides Layered Risk.

Many DeFi participants have found a way to put their holdings to work without selling them. They lock up native tokens as collateral, mint a decentralized stablecoin against them, and then redeem that stablecoin through liquidity pools for fiat-backed equivalents like USDT or USDC. The result is spendable, stable capital that can earn passive yield on centralized or decentralized lending platforms, while the original tokens stay in the portfolio.

On the surface, this looks like a clean and efficient loop. However, every step in the chain adds a layer of risk that is easy to overlook when yields look attractive. Smart contracts can contain vulnerabilities that no audit fully rules out. Collateral can also be liquidated if its price falls below the required threshold, which often happens fast during sharp market drops.

In addition, the redemption chain depends on every stablecoin in it holding its peg. If the decentralized stablecoin slips below its target value, the swap into USDT or USDC returns less than expected, and the losses can stack up before the participant has time to react. As a result, a strategy built for passive income can turn into an active problem within hours.

That is why disciplined investors treat these arbitrage plays with caution. Keep collateral ratios conservative, spread exposure across platforms, and never commit more than you can afford to see locked or liquidated.
