#anthropicceocallsforaislowdown 🚨 Anthropic’s CEO Wants AI to Slow Down. But Who Actually Benefits?
Dario Amodei just published a nearly 3,900-word essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.”
The headline sounds like:
AI is getting too dangerous. Slow it down.
But there’s an important distinction.
Pacing ≠ pausing.
Amodei isn't calling for a shutdown of AI development.
He wants frontier labs to slow the rate of capability improvement enough for safety research to catch up.
Why now?
Two developments changed the equation.
→ AI systems are increasingly helping build the next generation of AI.
→ A reported 700–1,200-agent AI swarm coordinated activity around Hugging Face during testing.
That creates a new risk:
AI isn't just getting smarter. It may increasingly participate in making itself smarter.
And that's where the story gets uncomfortable. 👀
Anthropic's proposal sounds simple: give independent evaluators such as METR permanent, employee-level access to frontier models.
Sam Altman and Elon Musk quickly expressed support.
But critics see another possibility:
Regulatory moat.
If compliance becomes expensive and permanent, Big AI labs can absorb the cost.
Smaller startups may not.
Then there's an even stranger contradiction.
Reports say Chinese labs generated roughly 190M Claude interactions through APIs during the summer.
Critics argue the bigger problem may be model distillation through API access, rather than frontier capability improving too quickly.
In other words:
The evidence and the proposed solution may not perfectly match.
And CEO support isn't the same as action.
Anthropic made a measurable commitment.
Others mostly expressed support for the principle.
🧠 Square Insight:
The hardest question isn't whether AI should slow down. It's who gets to define “slow” — and who can afford the cost of doing it.
Is AI pacing primarily a safety measure…
or could it become the next competitive moat?
