U.S. President Donald Trump has made new demands from Iran, making a quick deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz less likely. Trump wants Iran to pay compensation for deaths, injuries, and damage caused by conflicts over the years. Iran is also demanding compensation from the U.S. and says it will reopen the Strait only if the U.S. stops its actions against Iran.
Because both sides are making tough demands, tensions are increasing. Oil prices have also risen sharply. Trump said the Strait is already open and that he will continue economic pressure instead of starting new attacks. Iran has also appointed a hard-line official to its top security council.
