The part that stings is how available the fix was. InfoFi was right there. Base ecosystem projects were running campaigns all through that era and it would have cost the team nothing to ask for some of those campaigns to run on the base app too. Imagine 150k+ yappers opening the app to post daily. That's the ground already running.

Then January 15th, Kaito kills Yaps because X revoked API access for apps that reward posting. 157k yappers, a ~$649M InfoFi market cap, an entire attention economy evicted overnight with nowhere to go. Base app was a social app with no such policy. CT had already shown it would follow a campaign anywhere, people moved to telegram for leaderboards and stayed for the run. Base didn't have to invent demand, it just had to be the venue. It wasn't in the room.
But InfoFi on its own is rented growth, it dies when the payouts die. What actually keeps people is their circle, you don't stay on an app for rewards, you stay because your mutuals are there and leaving costs you something. Which is why the campaign design was everything. Rewarding individual yappers just imports mercenaries who leave. Rewarding clusters, groups who were actually replying to each other on the app, is how you migrate a graph. Twenty mutuals moving together sticks. One big KOL moving alone doesn't, because his followers follow 300 other accounts and the feed is still on X.
Instead we got a social app where the wallet and swap tabs were the real product and the feed was decoration. Socialfi should have been priority one, everything else secondary until people actually lived there. None of this was hard, it just needed someone who wanted to win at social specifically instead of treating social as an on-ramp to trading 🤦‍♂️#Base
