If you generated a seed on an affected Coldcard without strong external entropy or a robust passphrase, treat it as potentially compromised and move carefully to a fresh seed on patched firmware.

Self-custody remains the right model. It just requires understanding where the actual trust boundaries sit.

A Coldcard firmware bug from March 2021 caused certain devices to skip the hardware RNG and fall back to a weak software generator seeded by predictable values. Seeds that were supposed to be random weren’t.

500 single-sig wallets were swept between 01:31–01:56 UTC. Median loss: 0.41 BTC. Largest hit: 29.9 BTC. The attacker filtered by balance — this was deliberate.
Key numbers: → Mk3 (firmware 4.0.1+): entropy dropped to ~40 bits
→ Mk4/Mk5/Q (pre-fix): ~72 bits instead of 128
Updating firmware does not fix an already-generated seed. You must create a new one and migrate.

The real lesson:

“Cold wallet = safe” is a mental model, not a guarantee. Air-gapping stops remote attacks. It does not protect against weak entropy baked in at seed creation. Once the seed is compromised, physical isolation no longer matters.
On-chain we can see the consolidation and the precision. That same transparency lets sophisticated attackers scan for vulnerable patterns at scale.

Bài học thực sự:
“Ví lạnh = an toàn” là một mô hình tư duy, không phải sự đảm bảo. Cách ly bằng air-gapping ngăn các cuộc tấn công từ xa. Nó không bảo vệ trước entropy yếu được nhúng sẵn ngay từ lúc tạo seed. Khi seed bị xâm phạm, thì việc cô lập về mặt vật lý không còn quan trọng nữa.
Trên chuỗi, ta có thể thấy việc hợp nhất và mức độ chính xác. Cũng chính sự minh bạch đó giúp các kẻ tấn công tinh vi quét tìm các mẫu dễ tổn thương ở quy mô lớn.

Đây không phải là “ví phần cứng bị hỏng”. Đó là một lỗi cụ thể, đã tiềm ngủ rất lâu trong nhánh entropy của một nhà sản xuất. Các seed được gieo theo kiểu tung xúc xắc và các cụm mật khẩu BIP-39 mạnh nhìn chung nằm ngoài phạm vi ảnh hưởng.
Nếu bạn đã tạo seed trên một Coldcard bị ảnh hưởng mà thiếu entropy bên ngoài mạnh hoặc một passphrase đủ vững, hãy coi nó có thể đã bị xâm phạm và di chuyển cẩn thận sang một seed mới trên firmware đã vá.
