A central bank is studying a stablecoin with Tether, and this time it is in Central Asia.

📌 What happened
Per CoinDesk, the National Bank of Kazakhstan, Tether and the Alatau City Authority signed a memorandum of understanding to study a tenge-pegged stablecoin, asset tokenisation and decentralised finance. The parties will review how similar tokens work elsewhere, identify use cases and prepare a pilot proposal. Bonds and real estate were named as possible assets to tokenise in Alatau City, a zone with its own legal regime.

🔍 Why it matters
• Tether's Hadron platform, which issues and manages tokenised assets, is under consideration, and Tether will run workshops on reserves and issuance for central bank staff.
• Deputy Governor Binur Zhalenov said the bank intends to "thoroughly study international best practices in stablecoin issuance", which signals a stablecoin rather than a central bank digital currency as the model.
• For the issuer of $USDT, being a central bank's study partner is a reputational asset at a time when US and EU rules are tightening.

👀 What to watch
• Whether a pilot proposal emerges with a date, and which assets go first.
• The risk: the agreement is exploratory and commits Kazakhstan to nothing. Many central bank MoUs with crypto firms have gone quiet after the announcement.

💬 Would a tenge stablecoin on Tether's rails be a win for crypto or a step toward state-run tokens?
