Polymarket traders are now pricing a 56% chance of another 25 bps Fed hike in October, versus 44% for no change. The October contract has around $7M in trading volume.
That is a pretty big shift in the rate narrative.
The Fed already raised rates by 25 bps in September, taking the target range to 3.75%–4.00%, its first hike since 2023. Goldman Sachs has now also moved to expect another 25 bps hike in October.
And this is where crypto gets interesting.
The market was expecting a more supportive liquidity environment. Instead, we're suddenly talking about back to back tightening.
Personally, I think the October decision matters less than what happens to inflation and oil prices between now and then. If inflation keeps running hot, the Fed has less room to pause. If price pressures cool, these prediction market odds can flip just as quickly.
For BTC, another hike wouldn't automatically mean bearish price action. What matters is whether the market has already priced it in.
The interesting part isn't that traders see a 56% chance of a hike. It's that another hike is no longer looking like an extreme scenario.
