The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued its first-ever definitions of what qualifies as a crypto asset security.
The SEC released informal guidance outlining how it will classify cryptocurrencies as securities, in coordination with its sister agency responsible for overseeing commodities.
The guidance introduces several categories of digital assets, with only one category designated as digital securities. According to SEC Chairman Paul Atkins, this approach returns the agency to its core role of overseeing securities markets.
Atkins also stated that the SEC is expected to propose a formal rule within the next one to two weeks, which will further detail an innovation exemption and other aspects of crypto regulation.
