Venezuela is returning to the multilateral financing map with a figure that, if it materializes, would mark the largest inflow of external credit in more than twenty years: up to US$5 billion from the World Bank over a two-year period. The information, reported by Bloomberg based on remarks by the institution’s vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, Susana Cordeiro Guerra, does not yet represent a disbursement. It is an intention subject to conditions, and in a country where the exchange rate is driven as much by expectations as by actual flows, that difference matters enormously.
