In Tunis, Tunisia.
The Erlanger Bank of Émile Frédéric D'Erlanger, After a rocky start in Paris, secured significant deals
thanks to the famous Tunisian loans
from the years 1863 and 1865
initiated by Prime Minister Mustapha Khaznadar, under the reign of Bey Hussein,
deals that contributed
to the collapse of Tunisian finances and led to the establishment of the French protectorate in 1881.
Politics is the engine of prosperity or collapse in the economy. Mustapha Khaznadar had so heavily leveraged the country and multiplied the embezzlements that it had no say left, and occupation became inevitable.
