Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned oil company, president Magda Chambriard said the discovery is «absolutely relevant» to keep Brazil as «a geopolitically important hub in the world of oil over the coming decade».
The Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras expects to begin oil production near the mouth of the Amazon River within a period of up to seven years, according to calculations by the head of the oil company Magda Chambriard.
The company, controlled by the Brazilian state but with shares traded on the stock market, announced on Friday the discovery of hydrocarbons about 175 kilometers off the coast of the state of Amapá, the region where the Amazon River empties, and at a water depth of 2,886 meters.
