Binance Hit by Largest Crypto Hack in History; Wall Street Says It Poses No Systemic Risk as Traditional Finance Accelerates Its Entry
I. Recap: $6.3 Billion Hack Shakes Crypto Market
On October 29, 2026, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed a security incident involving approximately $6.3 billion, making it the largest exchange hack in cryptocurrency history. Tracked by blockchain security firm TRM Labs and prominent on-chain investigator ZachXBT, the attack was attributed to North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group. The attackers exploited a vulnerability in Ethereum’s EIP-7702 upgrade to gain authorization over hot wallets and attempted to erase traces of the attack using a self-destruct mechanism.
Following the incident, the crypto market saw sharp volatility, with more than $1.54 billion in contracts liquidated and Bitcoin briefly falling to $76,500. However, unlike the panic during the 2022 FTX collapse, the market reaction was relatively muted, with the overall decline limited to 2% to 3%.
II. Binance’s Emergency Response: Commitment to Fully Reimburse $6.34 Billion
In response to this unprecedented security crisis, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao quickly announced that the company had set aside more than $6.34 billion to cover user losses. Of that amount, $5 billion is already held in the affected tokens or their equivalent, while the remainder will be purchased through public markets and over-the-counter channels. Zhao stressed that Binance has sufficient financial strength to handle the incident and that there is no risk of a domino effect. Withdrawals are expected to resume within about 45 hours, while deposits have remained unaffected throughout the incident.
All recovered assets will be verified through proof of reserves. This transparency measure is intended to rebuild user confidence. So far, about $3 billion in stolen assets has been frozen through coordination with law enforcement agencies and partners.
III. Wall Street Institutions Speak Out: No Systemic Risk
Notably, several major Wall Street institutions quickly weighed in after the incident, agreeing that the hack would not pose a systemic risk to the crypto market. Cantor Fitzgerald, TD Cowen, and Compass Point all noted that Binance has sufficient financial capacity to absorb the losses. Haseeb Qureshi, a partner at Dragonfly Capital, further observed that market conditions are far calmer than during the FTX incident, as there are no signs of contagion or a cascade of bankruptcies.
This collective endorsement from traditional financial institutions reflects how the crypto market has gradually built greater resilience over the past few years. It also shows that institutional investors’ confidence in leading exchanges has not been shaken by a single security incident.
IV. Traditional Finance Accelerates Its Expansion: NYSE Parent Enters On-Chain Derivatives
Meanwhile, traditional finance giants are accelerating their move into crypto. Intercontinental Exchange Group, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, announced a partnership with Hyperliquid and TradeXyz to launch a U.S.-regulated perpetual futures trading platform. The announcement marks formal recognition of on-chain derivatives by traditional finance and is a milestone for the industry.
Boosted by the news, Hyperliquid’s native token HYPE rose about 3% against the trend, demonstrating strong investor confidence as the broader market weakened. The partnership shows that Wall Street not only sees promise in the long-term prospects of crypto assets, but is also willing to combine traditional finance’s compliance framework with the innovation of decentralized finance.
V. Stablecoin Milestone: RLUSD Receives First Investment-Grade Rating
In the stablecoin sector, Moody’s assigned Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin an A2 long-term and P-1 short-term deposit rating, marking the first time a stablecoin has received an investment-grade rating. RLUSD’s reserves consist primarily of short-term U.S. government assets and cash, are held in custody by BNY Mellon, and have a target coverage ratio of 103%. This rating is likely to further encourage institutional capital to enter the stablecoin market.
VI. Tokenized U.S. Stocks and DeFi Regulatory Developments
In tokenized assets, the range of tokenized U.S. stocks on Binance’s Web3 platform continues to expand, including EEM, MRNA, LIN, and several other assets. Meanwhile, the DeFi sector is seeing important regulatory developments: Uniswap and a16z are seeking an exemption from Illinois’s crypto tax, while Hong Kong’s U.S. dollar stablecoin HKDAP is also planning to launch on the Solana blockchain, showing that the Asia-Pacific region is accelerating stablecoin innovation.
Overall, although the $6.3 billion hack caused short-term market turmoil, Binance’s swift response, Wall Street’s collective endorsement, and the continued entry of traditional finance giants all indicate that the crypto market is moving toward a more mature stage of development. For investors, heightened security awareness and the development of robust compliance frameworks will be central themes in the next phase.
