La Rioja official warns of dangers inherent in Worldcoin activities.
Worldcoin seeks to establish regional hub in Argentina.
Authorities in the province of La Rioja, Argentina, have stepped up their actions against the US company Worldcoin, known for offering WLD tokens in exchange for iris scanning of people.
In the last week, the province's Cybercrime Enforcement Unit has closed down a location where iris scanning was carried out, and is in the process of scrutinizing the activities throughout the territory, adding to the measures previously adopted by the Province of Buenos Aires.
Silvina Santángelo, head of the La Rioja Cybercrime Executive Unit, warned about the dangers inherent in this technology:
«Worldcoin says that what they are doing is the provision for a global database where supposedly no other type of personal data is collected other than the hash code into which the iris is converted once it passes through The Orb, which is the device that performs the scanning, but it represents a great risk when it comes to delivering this information because The Orb is much more effective than the fingerprint when it comes to verifying a person's identity.»
At an international level, Worldcoin has also faced similar challenges. In Chile, the company has been denounced for collecting data without proper consent, while in Europe it has been banned in countries such as France and Portugal, and has faced injunctions in Spain.
Despite the controversies, Worldcoin continues with its expansion plans in Argentina⚡
