On August 13, Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, posted on the X platform announcing that the Ethereum Foundation has decided to abandon the Poseidon hash function on the L1 layer and move to traditional hash functions such as SHA or BLAKE.
This decision ends the eight-year, multi-hundred-million-dollar exploration of post-quantum cryptography that began in 2018.

Poseidon is a “SNARK-friendly” hash function created in 2019, optimized specifically for zero-knowledge proof systems. It is widely used by zkRollups and zkVMs, helping to ensure the security of assets worth billions of dollars.
