More than US$ 100 million in Bitcoin stolen

A software flaw in popular cryptocurrency storage devices allowed “several” hackers to steal more than US$ 100 million (R$ 515 million) in bitcoin.

Galaxy Research said on Monday (5) that it identified 1.596 bitcoins, valued at US$ 102 million (R$ 525.3 million) by Tuesday (6), which were stolen from more than 7,300 cryptocurrency wallets over three confirmed attack waves, in addition to other 14 lower-scale incidents.

The company found that a firmware flaw in physical wallets (hardware wallets) Coldcard—a compact and secure device used to store the recovery seed phrase that protects bitcoins—made the seeds (recovery phrases) vulnerable enough for hackers to discover them.

Coinkite, the manufacturer of Coldcard, confirmed last month that the issue affected some firmware versions and later released a fix.

However, the company warned that updating the firmware does not fix the seeds that have already been compromised. Therefore, it recommended that users move their funds to a new wallet generated with a new recovery phrase.

According to Galaxy Research, approximately 600 addresses of compromised wallets belonged to federal investigators, regulatory compliance-focused firms, and cybercrime investigators.
