🎯 “Every time I just hit your stop-loss, the market rockets right away?” Top trading mentor Rayner Teo reveals the “1 ATR buffer rule” to say goodbye to malicious stop-hunt wicks for good!
Many futures and spot traders have gone through the kind of rage-inducing moment that makes you want to smash your computer: you identify support and go long, then carefully place your stop-loss just a little below the previous low. But then a single long spike from the big players “perfectly pierces your stop-loss by 2 points,” followed immediately by a violent burst upward at a 45-degree angle!
You might even wonder: Is the market maker secretly checking my positions in the back office?
Well-known price action education mentor Rayner Teo bluntly says: “The big players don’t need to peek at your account at all—because 90% of retail traders make the same rookie mistake: placing their stop-loss on the ‘horizon line that everyone can see’!”
📌 Rayner Teo’s 3-step quantitative anti-kill-switch rule:
1️⃣ The only truth about stop-loss: the invalidation level
A stop-loss isn’t about cutting when you lose a certain amount of money; it’s about this: “When price reaches this area, it proves that the logic behind your entry has been completely broken.” If price only taps the previous low and then quickly rebounds, your support level has not actually been invalidated!
2️⃣ Know the big-player nemesis: ATR (Average True Range)
Don’t manually place your stop-loss based on feelings! Turn on the ATR indicator on your chart (set the period to 20). ATR measures the market’s most real “volatility breathing range”—when volatility is high, ATR is higher; when the market is calm and ranging smoothly, ATR is lower.
3️⃣ The “1 ATR breathing buffer formula”:
▫️ Long stop-loss price = key support / previous low − 1× ATR
▫️ Short stop-loss price = key resistance / previous high + 1× ATR
Big-player fake-breakout stop-hunt wicks usually only poke through the previous low by a few points (to hunt the obvious stop-loss orders set by typical retail traders). And that “extra 1× ATR buffer” gives the market room to “breathe,” helping you block 80%+ of malicious shakeouts!
💡 Mentor’s quote: A rational stop-loss must make the market feel “uncomfortable.” It should be placed where the price truly proves you’re wrong—not somewhere the big players can casually wick to with a flick of a finger!
💬 Soul resonance:
In real trading like
$BTC ,
$ETH , or
$SOL —have you ever been so angry by “getting stopped out and then it suddenly rips” that you questioned your life choices?
▫️ Poll 1: Happens way too often! Feels like the big players across the whole internet are targeting me.
▫️ Poll 2: I learned to add the ATR buffer early, and I’m rarely shaken out by fake breakouts anymore!
