Norway’s NBIM, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, passively bought BitMine—this is the first indirect move by sovereign capital into the Ethereum staking ecosystem
This is an institutional signal worth paying attention to.
Who is NBIM?
The world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, managing assets of $2.34 trillion, accounting for 1.5% of the total market value of global listed companies. In the first half of 2026, net profit hit a record $185 billion, with a return rate of 9.4%.
What did it buy?
It holds a 1.16% stake in BitMine (NYSE: BMNR), corresponding to a market value of about $88.25 million. This position resulted from passive allocation after BMNR was added to the Russell 1000 Index on June 26, 2026.
Who is BitMine?
The world’s largest single ETH staker, holding 5.81 million ETH—about 4.8% of Ethereum’s circulating supply. It has completed 95% of the 5% network target. Of this, 5.067 million ETH is staked, representing 14.9% of the network’s total staked amount (about 34 million ETH).
Its annualized staking yield is approximately 2.63%, generating around 133,000 ETH per year. At a $1,900 unit price, that translates to an annualized return of about $252.7 million.
BitMine’s ETH treasury strategy launched on June 30, 2025, starting with $250 million in private placement financing (investors include Cathie Wood’s ARK, Founders Fund, Pantera, and Galaxy Digital). Within one year, its ETH holdings grew from zero to 5.81 million, bringing total assets to $11.6 billion. It is now the world’s second-largest crypto treasury company (only behind Strategy).
Why is it worth watching?
While NBIM previously held shares in Coinbase, Strategy, and Bitcoin mining companies, BitMine is the first listed company to enter its shareholder roster with “ETH as the core of its balance sheet.” The boundaries between old and new asset frameworks are being quietly redrawn.
