On her 76th year, singer Bonnie Tyler, the performer of the hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” died
“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to share that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in a hospital in Portugal as a result of an illness she had been receiving treatment for,” a statement published on Tyler’s official website said.
In May, Tyler was put into an induced coma following an emergency operation on her intestines in Portugal. Last month, her representative said she had come out of the coma, but remained “very ill and in intensive care.”
“We will soon issue an additional statement, but for now we ask for privacy as we deal with this tragedy,” the singer’s representatives added.
Her biggest hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” was released in 1983; for it, she received a nomination for a Grammy Award, as well as two more nominations—for the album “Faster Than the Speed of Night” and the single “Here She Comes.”
