⚡ DID THE FIRST BITCOIN ASIC MINER EVER ARRIVE?
🗓️ The race began in 2012.
In June of that year, Butterfly Labs announced it was developing the first ASIC chip dedicated exclusively to mining Bitcoin—leaving behind the era of CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. A few months later, a small team led by Yifu Guo and Zhang Nangeng (founders of what would later become Canaan/Avalon) joined the race.
🏆 Who won? Surprise: it wasn’t Butterfly Labs, which suffered delays after delays. On January 19, 2013, Avalon shipped its first 300 ASIC machines from China, becoming the first manufacturer to deliver real ASIC hardware to the community. Soon after, ASICMiner also began operating its own rigs.
📈 The impact was immediate: the network hashrate jumped from 20 TH/s to 55 TH/s in just three months, definitively ending CPU/GPU mining and ushering in Bitcoin’s industrial era.
