So Hong Kong just told unlicensed firms they can't call themselves a "crypto exchange" anymore — and the banned-word list is longer than you'd think. The SFC proposed today to restrict terms like "crypto", "token", "virtual asset" and "exchange" to licensed players only, with a draft heading to the Legislative Council and six months' grace if it passes.
The why is simple: unregulated outfits keep borrowing the language of licensed ones.
$BTC is holding near $75,814, down about 0.2% on $21.7B in volume, while
$ETH sits near $2,239, and the market is barely flinching.
If
$BTC holds $75,000, this reads as cleanup protecting licensed names; lose it and the headline becomes one more excuse to sell a nervous tape. Will cracking down on the words push traders toward licensed platforms — or just push the shady ones to rebrand?
