The Margin Call: the silent trap that wipes out million-dollar funds 📉

Most people think big funds lose money because their analysis was wrong.
Reality is more cruel than that.

This is how the trap works:
A fund uses 4x leverage concentrated in volatile assets. On paper, the investment thesis is solid. The problem isn’t the analysis. It’s the margin.
If someone with massive capital detects that this fund is overexposed and leveraged in assets with low deep liquidity, they don’t need to “beat” them on the analysis. They only need to move the price enough to choke their margin.

The fund receives the Margin Call. It needs immediate liquidity. And that’s where the real problem begins.
Why don’t they sell in the open market?
Because selling large positions directly would crash the price and destroy the value of what they’re trying to sell. A cascade crash that devours itself.

Then the prime broker steps in and forces a negotiated sale outside the market—OTC—at massively discounted prices. The institutional buyer on the other side takes on the risk, but gets to acquire quality assets at prices the open market would never offer.

The lesson for the retail trader:
Leverage doesn’t kill you when the market moves against you. It kills you when it moves against you long enough for you to be unable to maintain the margin.

The difference between a temporarily losing position and an account being liquidated isn’t the price. It’s whether you have capital to hold on while the market decides.

Stop loss, proper position sizing, and never leverage beyond what you can sustain without emergency liquidity. That’s what separates the one who survives from the one financing the next institutional purchase at a discount.
