Oil is moving again in step with geopolitics.#Crudo
This week, Brent crude broke above $100 a barrel after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said at the UN that he will not give in to U.S. pressure.
Iran is asking that the U.S. naval blockade be lifted and that its frozen assets be released before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil trade moves. Meanwhile, tanker traffic is at its lowest level since early May.
The result is a market of extremes. Brent is up more than 7% over the last month and around 50% over the year, but any sign of an agreement could trigger sharp pullbacks: Exxon fell by more than 6% in a single week due to diplomatic expectations.
Interest rates add to this. Crude above $100 pressures inflation, and the market is already pricing in roughly a 70% chance of another Fed hike in October.
The question now is which energy companies can generate cash with high oil prices while everything turns around the reopening of Hormuz.
