🚨 The boy who stole 50,000
$BTC … and stayed hidden for almost 10 years
What would you do if you found a bug capable of making you a billionaire?
In 2012, 22-year-old programmer James Zhong discovered a vulnerability in Silk Road. He sent several withdrawal requests at once, and the system processed them all, even though there was only one deposit.
That’s how he managed to withdraw more than 50,000 BTC. At the time, it was worth about $600,000, and years later — already billions of dollars.
He didn’t spend the money showily. For almost ten years, his identity remained unknown.
But one small mistake changed everything.
He sent a small amount of bitcoin to an exchange with mandatory identity verification. That transaction helped investigators link him to the stolen funds.
In 2021, he was searched. The private keys were found hidden in a popcorn tin. All the bitcoin were seized, and later James pleaded guilty and received a prison sentence.
The main takeaway: the blockchain remembers every transaction. Sometimes one mistake is enough to reveal the whole story years later.
Do you think he could have stayed anonymous forever if he hadn’t sent those $200 to the exchange?
