When I joined a beach cleanup event with Binance for Clean Up Day, I spent meaningful time collecting waste along the shoreline alongside other passionate volunteers. Instead of just walking past the rubbish and assuming someone else would deal with it, our group stopped, took action, and picked up every piece of trash we could find. It was a hands-on experience that made us realize how much impact a single collective effort can truly have. Every day, I pass by a street corner in my neighborhood. For a long time, there was a growing pile of garbage there that seemed to become bigger with each passing day.
Plastic bags, empty water bottles, torn pieces of paper, food scraps, and other waste were all mixed together. The garbage not only made the area look unpleasant, but also created a bad smell and affected the cleanliness of the surrounding environment.
I saw that garbage pile almost every day, but I usually just walked past it.
Like many people, I sometimes thought, “Someone will clean it eventually.”
There were many days when I noticed the problem but did nothing about it. I kept telling myself that cleaning such a large pile of garbage was not really my responsibility.
But one day, I started thinking differently.
“If everyone waits for someone else to take the first step, who will actually start?”
That simple question made me decide to stop ignoring the problem.
Instead of walking past the garbage again, I decided to take action myself. I put on my gloves, prepared garbage bags, and went to the street corner to start cleaning.
Once I started, I realized that it was much more difficult than I had expected.
There was more garbage than I could see from a distance. Some plastic was stuck in the soil, while other pieces were hidden underneath bushes and around the edges of the road. I had to carefully pick up the waste piece by piece and clear the area as much as possible.
It took time, effort, and patience.
But as I continued cleaning, something encouraging happened.
The garbage bags slowly became full, while the dirty roadside gradually became cleaner. The place that had once looked unpleasant and smelled bad started to look more open, fresh, and welcoming.
When I finally looked at the cleaned area, I felt tired—but I also felt proud and satisfied.

For #CleanUpDayWithBinance, I wanted to do something simple that anyone can do. We do not always need a big event or a large team to help the environment. Sometimes, we can start with one small area around us, such as our home, garden, workplace, swimming pool area, or a nearby beach.
When I look around, I can see different types of waste. Some things can be recycled, some can be reused, and some need special handling. The important thing is not to put everything into the same bin.
So, if I had 30 minutes for a cleanup, I would start by collecting the rubbish and then separating it into different groups.
♻️ Recycle
The first group is recyclable waste. This can include plastic bottles, cola or soft-drink cans, glass bottles, clean cardboard, and paper.
For example, instead of throwing an empty cola can or plastic bottle together with general rubbish, I would put it aside for recycling. Clean paper and cardboard can also be separated from dirty waste.
Recycling is a simple habit, but it can help reduce the amount of waste that needs to be thrown away.
🔄 Reuse
The next group is things that can still be used.
Some containers can be washed and used again. Boxes can be useful for storage, and bags can sometimes be used many times instead of being thrown away after one use.
Before throwing something away, I think it is worth asking:
“Can I use this again?”
If the answer is yes, keeping it in use can be better than immediately turning it into waste.
🔌 E-Waste
Another important group is electronic waste, or e-waste.
This includes old phones, chargers, batteries, cables, and broken electronic devices.
E-waste should not simply be treated like normal rubbish. Batteries and electronic items can require special collection and disposal. When possible, I would keep these items separate and take them to an appropriate e-waste collection or recycling point.
🗑️ General Waste
Some rubbish cannot be reused or recycled, especially dirty or contaminated items.
These items should go into the appropriate general-waste bin instead of being mixed with recyclable materials.
🌊 Why does this matter for our oceans?
One thing I think about during a cleanup is where the rubbish could eventually end up.
Waste left on streets or in open areas can be carried by rain into drains and waterways. From there, some waste can reach rivers and eventually the ocean.
A plastic bottle thrown away carelessly may seem like only one small piece of rubbish. But when many people do the same thing every day, the amount of waste can become much bigger.
That is why I believe cleanup is not only about making a place look better. It is also about building better habits.
🌱 Start Small
We do not have to clean an entire city in one day.
We can start with one room, one garden, one workplace, one beach area, or one small place in our community. Pick up the rubbish, separate it properly, recycle what can be recycled, reuse what is still useful, and handle e-waste safely.
Even 30 minutes can be a good start.
