The Burmese New Year Water Festival, known as Thingyan, is the most significant and celebrated festival in Myanmar culture. The word "Thingyan" is derived from the Sanskrit word Sankranta, which means "transition" or "changing." It marks the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year, occurring annually in the month of Tagu (typically mid-April).

​Meaning and Historical Background

​According to Myanmar traditional belief, Thagyamin (the King of Celestials) descends to the human world to record the good and bad deeds of people. Splashing water during Thingyan symbolizes the washing away of the impurities, misfortunes, and sins of the past year, welcoming the new year with a fresh and purified heart.

​Stages of the Thingyan Period

​The festival usually lasts for four days, extending to five days during leap years:

​Thingyan Akyo Day: The day to welcome Thagyamin's descent to earth.

​Thingyan Akya Day: The day Thagyamin officially arrives; water throwing begins in earnest.

​Thingyan Akrat Day: The intermediate days while Thagyamin remains in the human world.

​Thingyan Atat Day: The final day of water throwing and the day Thagyamin returns to the celestial realm.

​Traditions and Food

​During Thingyan, the people of Myanmar engage heavily in merit-making. Young people pay respects to elders and grandparents by washing their hair, cutting their nails, and performing traditional "Gadaw" ceremonies. Many visit pagodas and monasteries to observe the Eight Precepts, practice meditation, and listen to Dhamma talks.

​In terms of food, Mont Lone Yay Paw (sticky rice balls with palm sugar filling) is the quintessential symbol of Thingyan. Neighbors often gather to roll these rice balls together, sharing laughs and sometimes playing pranks by putting a chili inside one of the balls. Other traditional delicacies include Thingyan Rice (wax-scented rice served with dried fish) and Mont Let Saung (tapioca or rice noodles in coconut milk or lime-water).

​Modern Thingyan

​In modern times, the festival has evolved to include contemporary music, entertainment stages (Pandals), and heavy water cannons. In major cities across Myanmar, people travel on the back of open-air trucks to visit various stages and enjoy the festivities. Despite these modern additions, the essence of the festival—decorated with the fragrant Padauk and Ngu flowers and the cooling spray of water offered with loving-kindness—remains timeless.
