In 2021, the U.S. Justice Department unsealed a file that reads like a Hollywood thriller. Three men - Park Jin Hyok, Jon Chang Hyok, and Kim Il.
They aren't rogue kids in a basement. According to the FBI, they are officers in Unit 121 of North Korea's military intelligence, the Reconnaissance General Bureau. Their office was in Russia and China. Their boss was Pyongyang who report to Kim. Their mission: fund a nucl£ar state with a keyboard.
And they became the most feared hacking group on earth: Lazarus Group.
Here is their resume, and why the world fears them:
1. They burned down Hollywood.
In 2014, Sony Pictures was about to release The Interview, a comedy about assa/ssinating Kim Jong-un. Lazarus, calling themselves "Guardians of Peace," broke into Sony, wiped thousands of computers, leaked every secret email, every salary, every unreleased movie, and left death threats on employees' screens. Cost: $150 million. It was the first time America blamed North Korea for destroying a U.S. company.
2. They robbed a central bank.
In 2016, they pulled off a bank robbery without a g*un. They hacked into Bangladesh Bank's SWIFT system - the system banks use to move billions - and sent a request to the New York Federal Reserve: send $951 million to the Philippines. They got away with $81 million. A single typo stopped the rest. It was the biggest cyber bank heist in history.
3. They held the world hostage.
In May 2017, they unleashed WannaCry. It was ransomware that spread like a virus to 230,000 computers in 150 countries in one weekend. Hospitals in England shut down. Patients were turned away. Factories, airports, and banks froze. All to extort $300 in Bitcoin.
4. Then they became crypto ghosts.
When sanctions choked North Korea's cash, they turned to crypto. The DOJ says they tried to steal over $1.3 billion. They built fake crypto trading apps, sent fake job offers to engineers, and drained wallets.
From KuCoin to Axie Infinity ($625M) to the record-breaking Bybit hack ($1.4 BILLION in 2025), blockchain trackers now say this one group has stolen over $7 billion. The U.S. government says that money goes straight to missiles.
Then are now the fingers in Binance $6.3 billion dollars hack some days ago.
They are not hackers looking for fame. They are a state - working for Kim . They don't have to hide for long, because they can never face trial as they are the state of North Korea and they have Nuclear weapons to cause massive havoc if anyone comes after them.
