You know how Ethereum has not only its main network (mainnet) but also testnets—like practice grounds for developers where they test new features before releasing them into the real world. Well, the largest of these testnets, Holesky, is officially being retired.
What happened?
It will be shut down two weeks after a planned fork called Fusaka is implemented on it in September. After that, all developer teams will stop supporting it. Essentially, it's the planned decommissioning of an old testing environment.
What was Holesky for in the first place?
It was launched last year specifically for stress-testing—to see how the staking infrastructure and a huge number of validators would behave during major upgrades. It did its job: it was used to test both the previous Dencun upgrade and the upcoming Pectra upgrade. You could say it served its purpose and is now making way for something newer.
Why are they shutting it down? Were there problems?
Yes, and that's the interesting part! Earlier this year, Holesky started having technical issues—"serious inactivity leaks." Basically, the network started to "leak" and glitch, which caused a huge backlog of validators trying to exit. They eventually fixed it, but the experience left a mark. Instead of constantly patching an old system with known bugs, the developers at the Ethereum Foundation decided to build a new, clean testnet from scratch.
What will they use for testing now?
It's being replaced by a new testnet called Hoodi. It's already live and free of the problems that plagued Holesky. All the infrastructure will be moved over to it. An important note: for developers building smart contracts and dApps, the Foundation has long recommended using a different network—Sepolia. It's simpler and more stable for everyday development tasks. Hoodi is more for low-level protocol and validator testing.
How does this connect to the upcoming upgrades?
This is a good time to remember that November is the target for the major Fusaka upgrade on the mainnet. It's designed to make rollups (Layer 2s) even cheaper and faster by better distributing the data availability workload among validators. And in 2026, we're getting an even bigger upgrade—Glamsterdam—which could reduce block time to 6 seconds (from the current ~12 sec)! All of these things need to be tested perfectly first, which is why having a reliable testnet is critically important.

This isn't a sign of weakness; on the contrary, it's a sign of a mature ecosystem. Instead of endlessly supporting an outdated and problematic system, the developers are making a quick decision to move to a better one. This allows Ethereum to move forward faster.
