I keep wondering whether the biggest shift Babylon introduces has less to do with staking and more to do with time.

Bitcoin has always been valued for preserving wealth across decades, while most PoS ecosystems evolve on much shorter cycles. Babylon quietly connects those different clocks. That sounds elegant, but it also creates a new coordination challenge. When long-term Bitcoin holders become part of the security model for rapidly changing networks, expectations may not always align.

One angle I rarely see discussed is governance through absence. BTC stakers don't necessarily want to influence the chains they secure, yet their economic weight could still shape ecosystem behavior. Security and governance may become increasingly separated, and that raises interesting questions about accountability when things go wrong.

The technology is impressive, but infrastructure often changes incentives before it changes user behavior. Markets tend to notice the yield first and the structural consequences much later.

Reading through the trustless vault paper for #Babylon $BABY , @BabylonLabs_io that framing holds up technically. But then you look at who actually moves the BTC. Most staking activity into Babylon hasn't come from individual holders locking their own coins — it's come from liquid staking token providers, who confirmed themselves as the dominant delegators even in earlier staking rounds. WBTC still shows up as collateral feeding LST mints, with the LST acting as the tradable layer users actually touch. So the trustless primitive exists at the base, exactly as designed, but the interface most people interact with is still an intermediary issuing a token on their behalf. That's not a flaw exactly — LSTs are what make staked BTC usable elsewhere — but it means the "no trusted party" pitch describes the vault's plumbing, not the average user's actual path into the system. Makes me wonder how much of BTCfi's growth is trustless in practice versus trustless in architecture, with most people still one layer removed from the thing being advertised.

💡 My Perspective
To me, Bitcoin remains the core source of economic security, while BABY serves as the coordination layer—helping manage validators, governance, and network incentives rather than replacing Bitcoin's security.

If the amount of Bitcoin securing the network continues to grow, will the value of the BABY coordination layer grow alongside it, or will the two evolve independently?

I went looking at @BabylonLabs_io trustless bitcoin vaults expecting the biggest story to be Bitcoin staying native instead of getting wrapped.

that was not what caught my attention.

I opened the market data afterward.

Babylon is currently securing more than $3.2B worth of Bitcoin, while the entire $BABY market cap is only around $47M–50M. At first glance, that looks like a market that's massively undervaluing the protocol.

then I realized I might have been asking the wrong question.

The Bitcoin locked inside Babylon doesn't need to buy BABY.

it is there because users want Bitcoin backed security and BTCFi without giving up custody. The service can become more valuable every time another BTC enters the protocol, while demand for the governance token only grows if more participants actually need to own and use it.

that creates a strange split.

The protocol can succeed.

bitcoin holders can benefit.

PoS chains can inherit Bitcoin's security.

and yet the token doesn't automatically capture the value created by any of that.

I'd always heard people say, "More TVL means the token should go up."

after looking at Babylon, I am not convinced that's a rule anymore.

TVL measures how much capital trusts the protocol.

Token value measures how much the market needs the token.

Those are not the same thing.

I think that is the real question Babylon has to answer over the next few years not whether Trustless Bitcoin Vaults work, but whether a network securing billions of dollars can create equally compelling reasons to own its governance asset.

Which metric do you think matters more in the long run: the value secured by the protocol, or the value the protocol gives back to its token?

The real question is whether Bitcoin's future role is simply to store value, or to become the most trusted form of collateral in digital finance without compromising its core principles.
