A "quay" is the part of a port or harbor where ships dock to load and unload cargo or passengers. It's basically a platform or wall built along the water. "Dock" and "quay" get used together a lot, but technically:
Term What it means
**Dock** The area of water where ships come in, or the whole facility
**Quay** The solid structure/wall where ships tie up alongside
**Wharf** Pretty much same as quay — used more in the US
**Pier** Structure that sticks out into the water, ships can dock on both sides
*Key things about quays:*
1. *Construction*: Usually concrete, stone, or steel sheet piles. Needs to be strong enough for massive ships and cranes.
2. *Features*: Bollards for tying ropes, fenders to cushion ships, crane rails, power + water hookups.
3. *Types*:
- *Container quay* - Has huge gantry cranes for loading shipping containers
- *Bulk quay* - For grain, coal, ore — uses conveyor belts/hoppers
