Matt Corallo said, $BTC the next soft fork has an 80% chance of being BIP-54 — a proposal drafted in March 2019, known as the “big consensus cleanup.” It aims to fix four loopholes left in the consensus rules in 2009: time warp, “poison” blocks, 64-byte Merkle tree transactions, and the replay risk of duplicate coinbase.
Progress has already reached mainnet: test vectors are set to merge at the end of 2025, testing will begin in February 2026 on Bitcoin Inquisition Signet, and MARA Pool and ViaBTC have already started producing compatible coinbase transactions on mainnet. Miners moving first says more about progress than the proposal itself.
Paul Sztorc dismisses it as mere “clean-up work.” It does indeed not change the economic model, but loopholes like these are invisible most of the time and hard to ignore when they cause trouble.
