AI competition is no longer just about designing powerful chips. The real challenge is building the infrastructure needed to produce them at scale.
According to reports, Tesla and NVIDIA are set to invest a combined $2.8 billion in Samsung Electro-Mechanics to expand production of advanced FC-BGA chip substrates in South Korea.
These components are essential for packaging advanced AI semiconductors. NVIDIA has also officially announced a strategic partnership with Samsung Electro-Mechanics to secure substrate supply and expand manufacturing capacity.
My take: This development highlights an important shift in the AI industry. As demand for computing power grows, companies need reliable suppliers and greater manufacturing capacity, not just better chip designs. Advanced packaging and semiconductor components could become increasingly important parts of the AI supply chain. However, the long-term business impact will depend on execution, production ramp-up and actual demand.
