Crypto AI revenue study: reported token usage exceeds observable payments

A research analysis published on October 22 examined 130 Web3 projects handling model tokens over September 13 to October 12, 2026. Excluding OpenRouter itself, it estimated approximately $8.7 million in identifiable or inferred model payments over 30 days. Venice accounted for about $7.2 million, or 83%, leaving roughly $1.5 million across the remaining projects.

The estimate combines observable on-chain payments and related mechanisms, supplier usage multiplied by effective prices, and public settlement records, with overlapping reseller activity counted once. It does not capture all off-chain card revenue. The study also estimated only about $3,800 in 30-day payments across token-priced x402 inference gateways.

These are research estimates with differing measurement coverage, not audited industry revenue. Reported token throughput should be assessed alongside actual payments, subsidies and credit utilization rather than treated as evidence of equivalent commercial demand.
