After four straight days of 3%+ swings, Bitcoin has gone quiet. Today's daily candle is the tightest since Oct 10. Here's what range compression is, how to measure it yourself, and what it does and doesn't tell you.
The data (Binance BTC/USDT daily candles, high-to-low range as % of the low, UTC days)
- Oct 12: 3.2%
- Oct 13: 3.9%
- Oct 14: 3.3%
- Oct 15: 3.6% (the sweep to ~$79.8k)
- Oct 16: 2.6%
- Oct 17 so far: ~0.7% (~$81,190 to ~$81,770), with $BTC near ~$81.5k at ~00:00 IST
What range compression means
Range compression is when each candle covers less ground than the ones before it. Buyers and sellers agree on price for a while, so volatility shrinks. It often shows up on weekends, when fewer desks are active and order books are thinner.
How to measure it in 30 seconds
1. Take the daily high minus the daily low, divide by the low. That's the day's range in %.
2. Compare it with the last 5 to 7 days. A day at a quarter of the recent average is real compression.
3. For a smoother read, use ATR (Average True Range), a built-in indicator on most charts that averages the range over 14 candles.
What it does NOT tell you
Compression says a bigger move is more likely to come. It does not say which direction. Anyone who tells you a quiet chart "must" break up is guessing.
Three things I check while it's quiet
1. Funding: BTC perpetual funding printed 0.0100% at the 05:30 IST settlement, then ~0.0037% at the next two. Longs are paying less, so the crowd is cooling, not loading up.
2. Positioning: about 63% of Binance futures accounts are long (long/short ratio ~1.68), barely changed from yesterday. Still long-leaning, so a sharp drop would hit more people.
3. Open interest: ~94.4k BTC, about 1% lower than 24h ago. Leverage isn't building into the range.
How I use it
- I mark the quiet day's high and low and treat them as the box.
- I wait for a candle to close outside the box, not just wick through it. The first poke out of a tight weekend range is often a fake.
- I keep size small until volume comes back, usually around the Monday Asia and Europe opens.
Not financial advice, just a way to read a quiet chart.
