Solana Shanghai Event Disrupted as CZ Addresses China Crypto Controversy

Meta Description: Solana's Shanghai crypto event faced a police presence after its China expansion drew attention, while CZ clarified his earlier comments.

Solana China Expansion Faces Regulatory Hurdles

Solana's push into China has encountered fresh complications after a Shanghai event faced disruption, drawing attention to the country's restrictions on cryptocurrency activities. The incident followed reports of Solana's expansion into Pudong, Shanghai, where the foundation opened an office.

The developments also prompted Binance founder Changpeng Zhao to clarify his earlier comments about Solana's activities in China. His clarification addressed speculation about whether his public remarks contributed to the events surrounding the expansion.

Solana Shanghai Event Encounters Police Presence

The incident unfolded at the Shangri-La hotel in Shanghai, where organizers had scheduled a Solana event to begin at 10 a.m. Attendees arrived to find police officers at the venue, according to an account shared by X user StarPlatinum.

The event's disruption came less than a day after CZ publicly commented on Solana's reported expansion in China. His earlier remarks referred to the foundation's Shanghai office and a promotional advertisement displayed at the city's Bund waterfront.

Around noon, organizers sent attendees an apology email explaining that venue logistics had caused the problem. The account shared by StarPlatinum described the sequence of events, including the police presence and subsequent communication from organizers.

The incident drew attention because China's cryptocurrency restrictions limit how blockchain businesses can promote their activities. Solana's expansion has raised questions about the distinction between operating blockchain infrastructure and publicly marketing a crypto ecosystem.

CZ Clarifies Solana Crypto Advertising Controversy

CZ addressed reactions to his earlier X post, explaining that he supports blockchain development across different networks and countries. He named Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, XRP, Solana, Hyperliquid, Zcash and SIGN, alongside stablecoins, as examples.

The Binance founder also said he welcomed Solana's ability to advertise and establish an office in Shanghai. He viewed such activity as a possible indication of broader changes to China's approach to crypto, which could benefit the industry.

However, CZ clarified that his post did not trigger the removal of the Bund advertisement. He said the advertisement disappeared within 10 minutes of appearing, while he only discovered the incident on X between 12 and 24 hours later.

CZ also pointed to China's real-time monitoring of public speech and media as context for the advertisement's quick removal. His comments challenged claims that his public remarks had directly caused the setback.

China Crypto Restrictions Remain Central to Solana's Expansion

StarPlatinum's account connected the event's disruption to the regulatory challenges facing crypto businesses in China. The post also recalled a similar incident from less than a year earlier, although it provided no further details about that case.

CZ referred to the latest developments as a possible sign that organizers had misunderstood local policies. His remarks followed the event disruption and the reported removal of the Bund advertisement.

The available accounts do not establish an official reason for the police presence at the hotel. Organizers cited venue logistics in their email, while CZ discussed China's monitoring practices and restrictions.

Solana's Shanghai office and the disrupted event therefore remain separate developments in the broader expansion effort. The incident has drawn attention to the regulatory boundaries facing public cryptocurrency promotion in China.
