France Wants More $BTC Holdings Reported to Tax Authorities
French lawmakers backed a proposal that would require people to report self-custodied crypto worth €100,000 or more, with fines of up to €10,000 for failing to declare it. The value would be measured at year-end.
How that compares with nearby markets:
→🇪🇦 Spain: crypto above €50K held with foreign custodians falls under Modelo 721, but wallets where users control their own private keys are excluded from that form
→🇮🇹 Italy: residents already report crypto-assets through Quadro RW, including assets held through wallets and other storage systems Agencia Tributaria
🇳🇱 Netherlands: crypto is treated as part of Box 3 assets, and the tax authority explicitly covers coins held in a personal wallet, on an exchange or with another party.
There is also an EU-wide layer coming in. DAC8 started applying in 2026, requiring crypto service providers to collect transaction data on EU-resident users, with the first reporting due in 2027. France's proposal is different because it would reach assets held outside those platforms as well.
For now, the French rule is still only part of the 2027 budget process, so it can still change before becoming law.
Do you think, crypto $BTC reporting stop at exchanges, or should self-custody be included too?
