Ethereum Just Gave AI a Private Payment Layer
Ethereum’s zkAPI is now live on mainnet, bringing zero-knowledge payments to metered APIs—including AI services. Users can deposit ETH or USDC into an Ethereum vault and authorize API spending with zero-knowledge proofs without exposing the billing identity behind the payment.

Why it matters
AI services normally connect three things: your identity → your payment method → your API usage.
zkAPI is designed to separate that payment trail from the API request.
The system can issue a short-lived, spending-capped API key, while the payment layer verifies that the user has sufficient funds without revealing which deposit or person is behind the payment.

That could be particularly interesting for AI agents and machine-to-machine payments, where software may increasingly need to pay for APIs, compute, data or other services automatically.
But there is an important limitation:
zkAPI ≠ complete anonymity.
The AI provider can still see the prompts and network information such as an IP address, and repeated content or timing can potentially link sessions.

So the bigger takeaway isn't “anonymous AI.”
It's that Ethereum is experimenting with a new financial layer where software can pay for software without every payment being tied to a persistent human billing identity.
