THE RISE & FALL OF CRYPTOCURRENCY IN NIGERIA.

Nigeria experienced rapid growth in cryptocurrency adoption due to inflation, naira depreciation, youth participation, and the need for fast international payments. Platforms like Binance and OKX became widely used for trading and peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions. In 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) prohibited banks from facilitating cryptocurrency transactions, pushing many users to P2P trading rather than stopping crypto activities. In 2024, the government increased regulatory pressure on Binance over concerns about foreign exchange stability, taxation, and anti-money laundering compliance, leading Binance to suspend naira-related services. OKX also restricted its services in Nigeria due to the evolving regulatory environment. However, there is no verified evidence that these actions were motivated by the personal interests of the then CBN Governor.
