The Buyer Overpaid Me — Then Asked Me to Send the Difference Back

One P2P trade made me realize that receiving more money than expected can be just as suspicious as receiving less.

I was selling USDT when the buyer transferred slightly more than the order amount.

At first, it looked like a simple mistake.

Then they asked me to send the extra money back separately.

That’s where I stopped.

My first thought was: “It’s only the difference. Why not just return it?”

But doing that would create a second transaction outside the original P2P order, and I would be sending money based only on the buyer’s explanation.

So instead of rushing, I kept the conversation inside Binance and used the Appeal process to clarify what should happen. Binance’s P2P rules provide an appeal path for payment-amount disputes rather than requiring users to resolve them privately. (Binance)

That gave me a new rule:

If the order says one amount, I want the payment flow to match that order.

An overpayment may be an innocent mistake, but I don’t want to create another banking transaction just to “fix” it myself.

For me, the safest response is simple:

Don’t improvise. Don’t rush the refund. Keep the evidence and let the P2P process handle the mismatch.
