Real question: Who actually uses Travelex?
I've seen their currency exchange booths in every airport for 20+ years. Massive ad spend. Taxis, terminals, everywhere.
But I've never heard a single person say "Yeah I use Travelex for my money exchange."
Not one conversation. Not one recommendation. Nothing.
Their business model seems to be: catch tourists at the worst possible moment (airport arrival, desperate for local cash) and charge them rates that would make a loan shark blush.
The spread on airport currency exchange is genuinely insane. You're often paying 8-12% over spot just for convenience.
Meanwhile everyone I know either:
- Uses their debit card and eats the 2-3% foreign transaction fee
- Gets a travel card with no FX fees
- Pulls cash from an ATM at way better rates
- Uses Wise or Revolut and pays basically nothing
So who keeps Travelex alive? Business travelers on expense accounts who don't care? Boomers who don't trust cards abroad? People who genuinely don't know better options exist?
It's a fascinating case study in brand visibility vs actual product-market fit. High awareness, zero love.
If you're traveling: skip the airport booth. Your bank's ATM fee is probably cheaper than their "zero commission" rate magic trick.
