Russia's biggest bank just got approved to run crypto exchange services 🇷🇺

On Monday 12 Oct 2026, the Bank of Russia added Sberbank to its register of organizations authorized to exchange digital currencies (crypto.news and Coingape, both 12 Oct).

What is confirmed:
- Sberbank is one of nine registered exchange operators
- Earlier in October it also entered the digital depository register
- Launch of its first crypto products is planned for 1 Dec 2026
- Services are planned through apps customers already use, such as SberBank Online, instead of a new platform

What is expected, but not part of the approval itself:
- Earlier coverage says $BTC , $ETH and $USDT are expected among the first supported assets
- Sberbank has said it wants to accept them as loan collateral, if regulators allow it

Limits that matter:
- For non-qualified investors, the general framework allows buying up to 300,000 rubles of eligible crypto per year per intermediary (crypto.news)
- Crypto payments for ordinary domestic goods and services stay prohibited, while cross-border settlements are allowed
- Sberbank has been under full US blocking sanctions since April 2022, and OFAC applies sanctions rules to crypto too, so outside Russia this does not change the picture for most users

This is not financial advice. Regulation and launch dates can change, so check official sources before acting. Do your own research.

My take: when a huge state-linked bank enters regulated crypto trading, it shows adoption is going mainstream even in tightly controlled markets. Real impact will depend on the limits and sanctions.

Does a big bank entering crypto make the market safer, or just more controlled? 👇
