Bitcoin’s Latest Push Higher: Breakout or Liquidity Trap?

Bitcoin is now at a key decision point, with the latest move higher facing a clear test around $86,500–$87,400. On the bullish side, stronger spot ETF demand, short liquidations building toward the $87,400–$90,000 region, and the recovery of the short-term holder cost basis near $85,600 are giving buyers a stronger foundation. If $BTC can hold above that area, the current resistance could turn into support and open the way toward $90,000.

The macro picture also offers some support for the bulls. Weaker U.S. jobs data has increased expectations for future rate cuts, which could improve liquidity conditions for risk assets. At the same time, Bitcoin reclaiming important on-chain cost bases suggests that buyers are absorbing some of the profit-taking rather than immediately giving back the recent gains.

But the move still has reasons to be cautious. The $86,500–$87,400 region has rejected price several times, while rising U.S. Treasury yields remain a major headwind for non-yielding assets. Slowing momentum indicators and declining volume on local pushes higher could also point to buyer exhaustion. A failure to break the resistance zone could turn the current strength into another liquidity sweep rather than the start of a sustained expansion.

For now, $87,400 is the key breakout level, while $85,000 is the immediate pivot to hold. A strong daily close above $87,400 would provide much better confirmation for a move toward $90,000. On the downside, losing $82,000–$82,500 would weaken the bullish structure significantly and raise the risk of a deeper move toward $75,000. Chasing directly into resistance offers less attractive risk-to-reward than waiting for confirmation or a deeper retest.
