WTI is rising—but the part I’m watching isn’t the price. It’s the positioning.
Oil is pushing higher as renewed U.S.-Iran tensions increase concerns around supply through the Strait of Hormuz. WTI recently moved toward the high-$80s.
But when price rises while open interest falls, the move deserves a different interpretation.
It can mean the rally is being driven more by position unwinding than aggressive new positioning.
That doesn’t automatically make the move bearish.
It simply changes the question:
Is fresh money entering—or are existing traders being forced to cover?
If OI starts expanding alongside price, I’ll take the move more seriously.
Until then, I’m watching the positioning—not just the candle.
A rising price tells you what happened.
Open interest helps explain who is still betting on it.
