Crypto feels global and leaderless until you notice. few women design the defaults, own the liquidity, or pick the speakers.
So today I’m talking about women in crypto, because finance is too serious to be left to one accent and one archetype.
Walk through Abuja meetups, Lagos Discords, Nairobi builder houses, and you’ll find them: the compliance officer who built a custody checklist between school runs; the community lead who translates whitepapers into Yoruba proverbs so aunties can decide for themselves; the dev who quietly refactors a swap router so slippage doesn’t eat market women’s profits. They don’t carry megaphones. They carry spreadsheets, seed phrases, stool samples of bad UX, and fixed them.
Crypto promised self-custody. Women translated it, a market trader in Aba learns to move stablecoins to her cold wallet rather than trust a passing “agent.” A student in Kaduna splits her internship stipend half spot, half to a women-run yield group that publishes every fee. These aren’t side quests; they’re mainnet behavior.
Yes, the headline numbers lag: venture checks, conference slots, core maintainers. But look at what rises anyway—education collectives where question-asking is a sacrament, audit bounties claimed by women at 2 a.m., product notes that begin, “My mother can’t…” That’s security work. That’s design. That’s growth.
On International Women’s Day, my ask is practical: fund the study group buying laminators for seed-phrase cards. Put women’s multisigs on payroll flows. Feature the builder who documents instead of flexes. And to women already here: you don’t need permission to teach your cousin to back up her keys, to push back on tokenomics that milk the poor, to build the simple thing that keeps people safe. You already are permission.
The revolution talk was cute. What we’re doing now is maintenance humble, essential. We write SOPs, we check addresses twice, we remind each other to eat. That care is the chain’s best encryption.
