How to Use Basic Indicators on a Meme Coin (Without Pretending They Can Predict It)
Most beginners treat indicators like a crystal ball. They see RSI at 25, think "oversold, it must bounce," and buy a meme coin that then drops another 60%. The problem isn't the indicator. It's the question being asked. On a meme coin, no indicator can tell you what price will do next. What it can tell you is how hot or cold the crowd is right now. That's a much more useful question, and it's the one I'll use here. Why meme coins break normal rules A normal asset has earnings, products, or cash flow to anchor its price. A meme coin has attention. When attention rises, price rises. When attention leaves, price leaves, often within hours. Indicators are built from past price and volume, so they always lag behind that attention. Expect them to confirm what already happened, not warn you about what's next. That's fine, as long as you use them for the right job. THE "Crowd Temperature Check": 3 BASIC INDICATOR 1. Volume: is anyone actually here? Rising price on rising volume means real participation. Rising price on shrinking volume often means a thin market where a few buyers moved it, and a few sellers can crash it. Check volume first. If it's tiny, stop there. 2. A moving average (try the 20-period on a 1-hour chart): which side is the crowd on? Price holding above the line suggests buyers are still in control. Price losing the line and failing to get back above it suggests the mood has turned. You're not predicting anything, just reading the current mood. 3. RSI: is the crowd overheated? RSI measures how stretched a recent move is. On meme coins it can sit above 80 for a long time during a hype run, so "overbought" is not a sell signal here. Use it differently: a very high RSI means you'd be buying at the point where the crowd is most excited, which is usually the worst entry. A high reading is a reason to wait, not a reason to chase. A worked example (illustrative numbers) Say a new meme coin jumps 300% in a day. You see it trending and feel the urge to buy. Run the check: Volume is huge but already falling from its peak. The crowd is thinning.Price is far above the 20-period average. The move is stretched.RSI is above 85. The crowd is at peak excitement. The checks don't say "it will crash." They say you'd be entering late, at a stretched price, with attention already fading. A better plan is to skip it, or wait for price to cool back toward the average with volume holding up. The rule that matters more than any indicator Decide your exit before you enter. Choose the amount you're willing to lose (an amount that wouldn't hurt your life) and the price where you'll admit you were wrong. Meme coins can fall faster than you can react, so size your position small enough that being wrong is survivable. Try this week Don't trade. Open three meme coin charts that spiked recently, add volume, a 20-period moving average, and RSI, and mark where each one looked "hot" before it dropped. Notice what the indicators showed and, just as important, what they missed. What this does not do These indicators won't predict which coin goes up. They won't protect you from rug pulls, hidden wallets, low liquidity, or a tweet that moves a coin in seconds. Most people who trade meme coins lose money. Treat this as education, not financial advice, and never risk money you can't afford to lose. If you want to go further I teach this by reviewing people's actual charts and trades, so you get feedback on your own decisions instead of general rules.
