Everyone's asking where altseason went. While they waited, more than 43 million $ETH — about 35% of all supply — got locked up in staking.
That's the highest share in Ethereum's history. And it happened while the price did nothing.
Here's the part nobody's talking about: the lock-up is real, but the rotation isn't. Not yet.
The staking queue tells the story. Roughly 1.4 million ETH is waiting to get IN — a ~25-day line to start staking. The exit queue, which spiked to ~851K ETH in early October after MetaMask's precautionary validator exits (~523K ETH), has eased back to around ~770K. More ETH wants in than out. At ~2.6% APR, the yield isn't the draw. The conviction is.
The institutions are doing the same thing. BitMine now holds ~6.03 million ETH — about 4.9% of all supply — with ~84% of it staked. But here's the catch: Tom Lee has said BitMine stops at 5%. The steadiest buyer in the market is nearly done buying.
Then there's the upgrade runway. Glamsterdam passed its first public test on Sepolia on Oct 6, lifting the gas limit from 60M to 200M within hours. The final testnet, Hoodi, activates Oct 26. Mainnet is targeted for Q4 — no date set yet. This is real technical progress, not a pump catalyst. History is blunt about that: the Merge and Dencun were both "sell the news." Only Pectra broke the pattern, and it had macro tailwinds behind it.
So why isn't any of this lifting the majors?
Because capital is still hiding in Bitcoin. BTC dominance sits near 59–60%. The Altcoin Season Index reads 21–28: Bitcoin Season. ETH/BTC is stuck near 0.029, down from its September peak. ETH is down ~9.9% so far in October. Fear & Greed says 59 — Greed — but the money disagrees.
Look at the majors: $SOL is ~$105, $BNB ~$727 — the most resilient major, down just ~3% on the week — XRP ~$1.31, LINK ~$12.12, the weakest at ~-9% on the week. All green today, all red on the week. That's a relief bounce, not rotation.
Overnight even gave us a preview of the tension: a ~$32.7M ETH short opened at $2,366 got partially liquidated as price bounced. Shorts are still crowded. This market punishes both sides fast.
So what flips it? Watch the levels. $ETH is holding ~$2,400 right now. Lose $2,325 and the Oct 15 low of $2,313 is back in play. Reclaim $2,500, then $2,575, and the recovery story gets legs. But the real rotation trigger isn't a price — it's ETH/BTC reclaiming 0.0300. Until that happens, every "altseason is here" post is early.
The honest take: ETH's foundation has never been this locked up or this upgraded. But foundations don't move prices — flows do. And the flows still say Bitcoin first.
Check $ETH's chart against those levels before the FOMC decision on Oct 28. That's the week this story gets decided.
