🚨 Bitcoin dropped below $84,000 right as the US government's wallets woke up for the first time in six weeks.
On Tuesday, government-linked wallets, tracked by on-chain analyst EmberCN and confirmed by Wu Blockchain, moved 833.6 BTC, worth about $71.6 million, to Coinbase Prime. It's the first movement from these wallets since August 26.
Alongside it, a separate $31.6 million in BNB got shifted too, combining for roughly $103 million in total activity in a single window.
The coins trace back to two specific legal cases: the 2016 Bitfinex hack and the HashFlare fraud case, government-seized assets, not a policy-driven sale. Sending funds to Coinbase Prime doesn't automatically mean liquidation either, the platform handles both custody and active trading for institutional clients.
Context matters for scale here. The US government still holds roughly 323,694 BTC, worth about $27.7 billion. This transfer represents just 0.26% of that total stash.
Still, the chart shows the psychological impact clearly. BTC pulled back from resistance near $87,500 down toward $84,000, a 1.72% daily drop, right as RSI was already rolling over from its recent high near 56. When a historically dormant wallet suddenly moves, even a small amount relative to total holdings, it's enough to spook short-term sentiment.
This reads as a textbook pullback after a strong move up, not a breakdown. The $82,500-$80,000 zone remains the support level to watch if the dip extends further.
