Software Is Learning To Pay Per Request 💳

$BNKR and $GRT both exist because somebody has to pay for the thing in the middle. Queries, inference, data. None of it is free, and until recently none of it could be billed to a machine.

Bankr's builder surfaces include x402 Cloud paid endpoints alongside the Agent API, the CLI, Claude Code plugins and the LLM Gateway. The x402 part is the one worth understanding, because it is a payment rail rather than a feature.

The problem it addresses is old and unglamorous. API billing assumes a company with a card on file, a monthly invoice, and a human who approves it. An agent has none of those. It has a wallet and a task.

Per-request payment settles that directly. The caller pays for the call, at the moment of the call, with no account relationship in between. That is how one machine buys something from another without either operator signing anything.

What it enables is the boring infrastructure the agent economy actually needs. An agent that can pay for data can buy data. One that cannot has to be handed an API key by someone who cares about it.

Whether it becomes standard depends on adoption rather than design, and most payment standards fail on exactly that. Worth watching how many endpoints accept it across DeFi and beyond, not how elegant the spec is.
